Stained Glass Window Collection
The Steven and Beena Levy Stained Glass Window Collection by Artist Lev Gal Wertman
The Barer Family Sanctuary at GRTWA houses a beautiful collection of twelve stained glass windows by Israeli artist, Lev Gal Wertman. The windows are set in the walls surrounding the sanctuary and depict the story of Creation as told in the book of Genesis. The sanctuary was built with the stained-glass collection in mind, and the completed project ties the sanctuary to the rest of the school and its rich Jewish history.
Lev Gal Wertman is a multimedia artist who works in different mediums and uses diverse materials and techniques such as latex, aluminum casts, plaster and wax, and video and computer art. His work has been exhibited at the Gordon Gallery in Tel Aviv, The Israel Museum in Jerusalem, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Antwerp, the Regional Centre for Contemporary Art in France, The Jewish Museum in New York City, and the Documenta X in Germany. In addition, his works have been purchased by various museums, institutes, and private collectors.
The entire collection has been named by Steven and Beena Levy in honor of their family. The Levys have been very active in and are longtime donors of the school. They are alumni parents, past board presidents, and currently grandparents of three students at the school. Nine of the windows have been named by individual donors with three still available for naming opportunities.
The Stained Glass Artisan for this project was Bonnie Hook of Georgia's Stained Glass Werks in Rockaway. Bonnie has been designing, restoring, and fabricating for over 30 years.
The New Jersey Jewish News recently published an informative article on the process that went into creating this amazing collection. Click here to read the article.
As part of the stained-glass window project, the school has a limited-edition collection of 50 fine art screen prints of each window, signed and numbered by the artist. For a price list and order form, click here. Click on an image below for more information about the window.
